Dementia Series

Dementia training is an educational program designed to equip individuals, particularly caregivers and healthcare professionals, with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide compassionate and effective care for people living with dementia. By fostering empathy and building practical skills, dementia training empowers caregivers to provide person-centered care that respects the dignity and individuality of each person.

One-Hour Dementia Training:

This training emphasizes staff education on recognizing dementia signs and symptoms and responding appropriately, with a focus on resident safety. It outlines dementia as a brain condition affecting thinking and memory, detailing associated changes like agitation, confusion, impaired communication, and sensory disturbances, while also addressing wandering and elopement, defining these behaviors, outlining risks, and detailing emergency plan procedures. Additionally, the overview stresses respectful employee conduct, adherence to patient rights, and person-centered care principles, highlighting resident choice, dignity, and individualized care as a culture change in long-term care, and its role in abuse prevention.

Two-Hour Dementia Training:

Expanding on the One-Hour Dementia Training, the Two-Hour training covers: Dementia as a group of symptoms including memory loss, impaired judgment, and language difficulties from permanent brain neuron damage. It discusses irreversible types like Alzheimer’s, vascular, and Lewy body dementia, as well as some conditions with dementia-like symptoms that are reversible. This course stresses the importance of understanding altered perspectives, as behaviors often stem from frustration and confusion.

Three-Hour Dementia Training:

This module incorporates the Two-Hour Dementia Training and further emphasizes that dementia’s impact on memory, language, judgment, and other brain functions necessitates adapted communication strategies focused on the person’s abilities and the meaning behind their words and actions. It outlines effective communication techniques while advising to avoid negative words and arguments, and underscores the importance of empathy, acknowledging frustration, and recognizing that effective communication saves time and reduces stress.

Four-Hour Dementia Training:

This offering contains the content in the Three–Hour Dementia Training and adds emphasis on that actions and reactions in people with dementia are forms of communication, stemming from various factors including health conditions, medications, communication challenges, environmental issues, task difficulties, unmet needs, life story influences, and caregiver interactions. Viewers are guided to understand these underlying reasons to individualize their responses, focusing on a three-pronged approach: Prepare, Prevent, and Be Present. The training also provides strategies for handling difficult situations, prioritizing safety, de-escalation techniques, and post-incident review for future improvement.

Six-Hour Dementia Training:

This training includes information found in the Four-Hour Dementia Training and outlines state and federal laws, CMS definitions, and various types of abuse, emphasizing proactive prevention strategies like resident-centered care, self-awareness, and de-escalation techniques, alongside the SAFE acronym for intervention. It details the legal duty to report abuse, specifies reporting timeframes and whom to contact, and explains protections against retaliation under the Elder Justice Act, including complaint procedures and penalties.
